I'm not sure if this is already well-documented, if it is, boy I sure missed it.
Anyway... After spending a copious amount of hours searching the internet and the engine source code I finally figured out how the Unreal Engine draws text in editor mode.
I'm sharing this in a quick tutorial so you too can display debug text in the editor similar to how the navigation system debug visualisations do, which by sheer coincidence, is where I found the solution, who would've thought.
