LEFT OUTER JOIN | LEFT JOIN | OUTER JOIN | SQL JOIN
LEFT OUTER JOIN | LEFT JOIN | OUTER JOIN | SQL JOIN
The OUTER JOIN is an extension of INNER JOIN or EQUI JOIN. By using the outer join we can retrieve both matching and non-matching data from the tables. OUTER JOIN is classified into three categories:
1. LEFT OUTER JOIN
2. RIGHT OUTER JOIN
3. FULL OUTER JOIN
In this video, we will see the LEFT OUTER JOIN with a real example.
LEFT OUTER JOIN returns the matching data from both the tables and non-matching data from the left table also. The non-matching data of the right table take the default NULL value in this case.
SELECT
U.Name,
U.Email,
U.MobileNumber,
ISNULL(R.Name, 'Unknown') AS RoleName
FROM [User] U
LEFT OUTER JOIN UserRole UR ON U.Id = UR.UserId
LEFT OUTER JOIN [Role] R ON UR.RoleId = R.Id
Instead of the full name of the join, you can also use LEFT JOIN only. The result will be the same:
SELECT
U.Name,
U.Email,
U.MobileNumber,
ISNULL(R.Name, 'Unknown') AS RoleName
FROM [User] U
LEFT JOIN UserRole UR ON U.Id = UR.UserId
LEFT JOIN [Role] R ON UR.RoleId = R.Id
