http : Hypertext Transfer Protocol : url begins with http:// and it is unsecured protocol to use. HTTP operates on application layer and there is no ecryption with http and also no need to get certificate for http.

https:Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure : url begins with https:// and it is secured protocol . HTTPS operates on transport layer and encryption is present with HTTPS . For HTTPS you will need certification.

We should use HTTPS for those website where user or customer share sensitive information like credit card etc. Mostly banking site and ecoomerce sites uses https.
