JSON, short for javascript object notation, is a light weight human readable format for handling data from the web server to a web application and vice versa
JSON is a text format, leaner than xml, that can easily map into a javascript object, it takes less time to process and loads faster due to it's leaner size
JSON comes in most handy when reading in data from another source, for the most part you won't see a lot of pure JSON written within javascript
JSON is langauge independent not limited to only javascript, meaning it's supported and used in many popular languages
