What are the best XML tutorials for beginners?
XML version five came out in 2008. One benefit of this is that you’ll probably find decent XML for dingbats books at most half price book stores.
I want a tutorial that teaches me how to use XML interactively, not tons of reading. If I wanted tons of reading, I’d open up the code and try to learn it like HTML.
Then I would suggest the XML basics tutorial on XMLfiles.com. They describe what XML is, how it can be used, give the syntax for the language and a number of examples.
It is hard to explain XML without examples.
They even describe how to use XML with IE and Netscape.
OK, that’s an old tutorial. Netscape is Mozilla now.
Basics on how to use Document Definition Type have not changed since the tutorials were made, and the content is free.
And I’m free to look for something else.
Then go to the Microsoft development network home and go to their overview for learning XML.
If I can afford their content.
Actually, the XML introductory lessons are free. They want XML to be an internet standard -
The way Internet Explorer is not.
They do of course tell you how to use C# and MSXML libraries on the site.
That’s the Microsoft specific XML.
To be honest, it is hard to get much free content on programming in Objective C from Apple, too. Swift tutorials are only freely available because Apple needs to train all the programmers how to use it.
If I can stand using Microsoft’s XML tutorials without all the ads for Microsoft, I could try it.
They do give you information on modifying XML via XML editor, as well as the Microsoft Visual Studio schema explorer and XSLT debugger.
And that’s the advertising I was expecting.
You can try the database, internet and systems integration course on MIT opencourseware. It is free, but it may be too advanced for you.
You had me at free, well, that and MIT.
The course does cover UML and SQL as well as XML.
Then it is broader than what I need right now.
So open up the page, read through the lecture notes for XML, then jump to the assignments section of the tutorial to try assignments for yourself.
I suppose you have to go to the source to get the good information.
Speaking of going to the source, you could review the XML basics for new users course from IBM’s developer’s network. It is a free lesson on how to code things in XML plus tips on editing it in the browser.
That’s going pretty deep.
If you want more depth, waste a weekend reading the XML standards on the w3 dot org slash XML page.
I would rather read all the recent books at the library on learning the XML language.
You’d be better off with the W3schools dot com tutorial on XML. It is easier to read and lets you jump to the sections you need help understanding like namespaces and XML trees.
