Java is popular for many reasons, including its flexibility. It can create apps for servers and network clients, or single computers. It’s also very easy to use. Java programming proponents also tout its security and object-oriented design. Java is also open source, with a large community eager to support it.

As with anything, it’s not perfect. You don’t have to look hard to find Java critics bemoaning its wordiness and complexity. In fact, Groovy and Scala, two popular Java alternatives, emerged to address these complaints.
