This is an animation of the United Stated Electoral College map including presidential winners (checkmarked), losers, and political parties. The video contains three versions of the animation: High speed, low speed, and then a medium speed view of the Republican era from Lincoln 1860 through Obama 2012. (Who cares about John Fremont—AMIRITE?!).

Some interesting things to observe:
Solid South - Southern states voted Democrat very consistently from 1876 until about 1964. Nixon's "Southern strategy" helped switch the south to vote Republican. It's interesting to see how consistently blue those states are.

Whig Don't Do No Party - Although Whig party members drifted toward either the Republicans or Democrats, there's no consistent pattern in the electoral college. Them crazy Whigs.

Zany Elections - 1824 is a complete mess with four Democratic-Republicans running against each other including perennial loser Henry Clay. 1836 also had a large number of Whigs running against a Democrat (and the delightfully named Magnum, Independent.)

2. "Moving Force" by the Robert Fripp String Quartet from a bootleg recording.alternately titled Kan-Non Power or Soundscapes. The track is also available on the Robert Fripp & the League of Crafty Guitarists album Show of Hands, 1991.
