The Python language was created in the Netherlands in 1989 by programmer Guido Van Hossum, who worked at the Center for Mathematics and Computing (CWI) in Amsterdam.

The name Python was a tribute to the English series Monty Python Flying Circus, and was Van Hossum's own idea, as projects within CWI were named after television programs.

Currently the language is maintained by a non-profit foundation called Python Software Foundation, which is supported by several companies such as Microsoft, Google and Globo.

Python is a general purpose interpreted cross-platform language that is easy, intuitive and, above all, very organized. Python is free software and 100% object-oriented. The Python language is widely used in the fields of artificial intelligence, 3D computing, biotechnology and virtual reality, thanks to its simplicity, versatility and processing capacity.

Who uses Python? Zope, Air Canada, BitTorrent, Globo, Google, YouTube, NASA, Industrial Light & Magic (Python was used in Star Wars), Autodesk and more.
