In this video, I delve into the parallel query processing documentation in SQL Server, pointing out several inaccuracies and misleading statements within it. I begin by examining constructs that inhibit parallelism, such as scalar UDFs, remote queries, dynamic cursors, recursive queries, multi-statement table-valued functions, and the 'TOP' keyword. These topics are discussed with examples from the Stack Overflow 2013 database to demonstrate how some of these constructs can still allow parts of a query to run in parallel despite being listed as inhibitors. I also explore scalar UDFs in computed columns and check constraints, showing that while they inhibit parallelism for certain operations, other parts of the plan may still benefit from parallel execution. Additionally, I cover multi-statement table-valued functions and the 'TOP' keyword further, illustrating how their restrictions on parallelism are not as absolute as the documentation suggests. Through these demonstrations, I aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of parallel query processing in SQL Server.
