The issue generally happens when you use spaces in place of Tab in the Makefile/Make files.

In most Visual Studio Code (VS Code) there will be a setting to change the Tab to spaces conversion.

Makefile is a way of automating software building procedure and other complex tasks with dependencies. Makefile contains: dependency rules, macros and suffix (or implicit) rules.
