You use HTTPS every day—but do you actually know what happens when your browser connects to a website?

In this video, we'll break down HTTPS and TLS visually, showing how your browser securely communicates with web servers and why attackers can't read your data in transit.

🚀 What You'll Learn

• What HTTPS actually is
• How TLS works
• TLS Handshake explained step-by-step
• Public Key vs Private Key
• Session Keys
• Symmetric vs Asymmetric Encryption
• Certificate Authorities (CA)
• Why HTTPS is secure
• What HTTPS does NOT protect against

🔐 TLS Handshake (Simplified)

Browser connects to the server
Server sends its TLS certificate
Browser verifies the certificate using trusted Certificate Authorities
Browser and server perform a key exchange
A shared session key is created
All future communication is encrypted using AES

🔑 Why Use Symmetric Encryption After Asymmetric?

Asymmetric encryption is secure but computationally expensive.

TLS uses asymmetric cryptography only for authentication and secure key exchange.

Once both parties agree on a session key, fast symmetric encryption (AES) is used for all data transfer.

🏢 What Is a Certificate Authority (CA)?

A Certificate Authority is a trusted third party that verifies a website's identity and signs its certificate.

Examples include:

• DigiCert
• Sectigo
• Let's Encrypt
• GlobalSign

If a CA is compromised, certificates issued by that CA can no longer be trusted.

⚠️ What HTTPS Does NOT Protect Against

HTTPS encrypts data in transit, but it does not protect against:

• Malware on your device
• Server-side vulnerabilities
• Phishing websites
• Compromised Certificate Authorities
• Weak passwords
• Data breaches on the server

💡 Rule of Thumb

See the padlock icon?

🔒 HTTPS = Data is encrypted while traveling across the internet.

Without HTTPS, anyone on the network could potentially read your traffic.
