Simple Light Timer Automation (Node-RED Introduction)
Welcome back to Chuck Builds! In this video, I’m continuing my smart home rebuild series in my new Florida home — this time, diving into lighting automations.
In the last video, we set up Zigbee2MQTT and made sure our Zigbee network was clean, stable, and isolated from Wi-Fi interference. Now that everything’s talking properly, it’s time to make the lights actually do something smart.
We’ll build two versions of the same automation — a porch light schedule — to show how both systems work:
-Home Assistant Automations (the UI editor)
-Node-RED (my preferred visual approach)
By the end, you’ll understand the pros and cons of each method, when to use built-in automations vs Node-RED, and how to structure your lighting logic for reliability and clarity.
