Hey everyone, it's Matt, and today I'm going to show you how to get a Stripe API key. I'm logged into one of my Stripe accounts, specifically in the transactions section.
To get your API key, whether for an app, website, or to integrate with someone else's product, you just need to head to the bottom left of the screen and click on the "Developers" button. This will take you to the main developers interface.
Once you're in, look for the "API keys" tab at the top. Here, you’ll see the option to create an API key.
You can either create a secret key or a restricted key. The secret key gives you full access to your account, while the restricted key allows you to set specific permissions for added security.
If you want to limit what the API key can do, go for the restricted key. When you click on "Create Secret Key," Stripe will ask how you plan to use this key.
You can either provide it to another website or build your own integration. If you're just giving it to a third party, Stripe will recommend creating a restricted key for security reasons.
So, let's proceed with creating a restricted key for this video. Next, you'll need to enter the name of the third party you're giving the API key to and their URL.
You also have the option to customize permissions for this key. I’m just going to put the name of my company here for demonstration.
After that, click on "Create Restricted Key."
Stripe will require additional verification for security, so they’ll send a verification email. I’ll check that now.
After completing the verification, you’ll see your new API key. It’s important to keep this key safe, as it will start with "rk" and include a mix of letters and numbers.
You can easily copy the key to your clipboard by clicking the copy button, making it easy to paste wherever you need it. Just to recap, there are restricted keys and standard keys.
You’ll be prompted to create a restricted key if you’re using it with someone else’s app for security reasons. If you’re creating your own app, you can use a standard key instead.
