Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is an application layer protocol for transmitting hypermedia documents, such as HTML. It is designed for communication between web browsers and web servers. HTTP follows a client-server model, with a client opening a connection to make a request, then waiting until it receives a response from the server. HTTP is a simple yet powerful backbone of the web.

HTTPS (HTTP Secure) is the use of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) as a sublayer under regular HTTP.

SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, was the original encryption mechanism developed for HTTP. SSL was replaced by TLS or Transport Layer Security. SSL handshakes are now called TLS handshakes. But the term SSL is still in wide use.
