So it's been years since I've been a Software Engineer and one of the things I noticed is that I am always looking for ways to do things faster when it comes to my workflow. The thought process behind this is an obvious one. If I can speed up the things that I do over and over I can spend more time coding. Also if I can organize my workspace in a way that decreases clutter and cognitive overload. I can free up more mental space to dissect the problems that I'm working on. I think workflow efficiency is not discussed enough in the software engineering space so in today's video I will be sharing with you 4 tips on how to increase your workflow efficiency when programming.
Tip #1 (Time Management) (1:26)
So we live in the day and age of distractions. Our attention is always being pulled by one thing or another. And being that we work primarily from computers as software engineers, we have things like the internet, social media, memes, and email constantly demanding our attention. So I think that it is really important to start your day out knowing exactly what you want to accomplish. I also think it is equally important to limit distractions while you work on said tasks. So I have a couple suggestions and recommendations when it comes to time management.
The first is to set aside time to do the things that aren't programming related. Such as answering emails or anything of that nature. Once that time is up, assuming your aren't expecting anything important, mute or silence these mediums before you get started on your tasks.
As far as coming up with these tasks. I like to start the day out making and organization my task list. I personally use an app called Todoist. But there are many ways to do this. Even good old pen and paper will work here.
Once you have your task list ready. Prioritize each task and decide what is most important for you to accomplish for this day. This will be the task you start on first.
Also I have to note that it's okay if you don't get through every task on your list. You will get better and better at making realistic lists as you keep doing this.
So remember there are two important factors here when it comes to time management. Creating a distraction free environment. And task prioritization.

Tip #2 (Window Management) (3:58)
Organizing your digital workspace and what you see on the screen is very important as a programmer. This is especially important if you use command line (which I will get into in a bit). When you have your windows in the places you need them, going back and forth between development environment and other software becomes a lot more seamless. So I have a couple of suggestions when it comes to window management on both Mac and PC.
On Mac there is a window management application called Magnet, which I will link down below. It comes with customizable keyboard shortcuts that helps place windows exactly where you need them on screen. This is a very powerful tool and I recommend it for anyone that develops on a Mac.
Windows on the other hand has very good window management built into the OS (sorry Mac). The keyboard shortcuts are very intuitive so if happen to develop on Windows I recommend that you learn these keyboard shortcuts and add them to your workflow.

Tip #3 (Command Line) (5:27)
When I was first starting out as a programmer I saw the command line as this intimidating beast that couldn't be conquered. That can't be further from the truth and now I can say I use command line extensively for things including but not limited to. Source control (if you don't know what that is, I plan on making a video on it. But in layman's terms it is a way to remotely manage and share your codebase.), building my project (in Android we use gradle here), and even creating directories and file management type stuff.
Tip #4 (Learn Keyboard Shortcuts) (7:14)
Last but not least is to learn your keyboard shortcuts. This is so important because it allows you to keep your hands on the keyboard which adds to the factor of efficiency.
If you use an IDE or Integrated Development Environment some important keyboard shortcuts to know are.
1. Searching for a file
2. Opening a file
3. Global text search
4. In file text search
Some good OS keyboard shortcuts to know are
1. Snapping and moving windows
2. Locking your screen
3. Searching for a file or application
And of course there are many more keyboard shortcuts out there so I recommend that you explore and find out which ones will useful to speed up your workflow.
