Here is my Minecraft XP Farm, a fast way to get to 30 xp out of your mob spawner quickly and safely. I used this in my 2nd Minecraft world let's play series to collect xp.

This xp farm has the following features:
Loot pusher to push all mob drops to you
Flip a switch to confine mobs to collect loot & xp, or to drop the mobs into a lava pit
a mob crusher with an adjustable time-delay (so you can 'one-hit-kill' them)

I'll show you how to build the different features into the xp farm and adjust them to fit your own mob spawner. like the time-delay on the mob crusher.
