After Effects CC 2021: How To Use loopOut(“offset”) Expression

This tutorial will show you how to add the loopOut(“offset”) Expression to the Position Property in Adobe After Effects CC 2021. This expression will continue the animation after the last keyframe you set and is useful as you can control the speed with the 2 original keyframes.


To Add Expressions: Hold the Option/Alt Key and click on a layer stopwatch and then type the Expression in the Timeline Panel

loopOut(“offset”) Adobe Definition: Repeats the specified segment, but offsets each cycle by the difference in the value of the property at the start and end of the segment, multiplied by the number of times the segment has looped.More on Expressions: https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects...

How To Add loopOut(“offset”) Expression:
1. Open Composition
2. Go to Layers Panel
3. Click on layer to animate
4. Add a Position Keyframe
5. Move object to middle of composition to add another keyframeThe animation will start from left and stop in the middle.
6. Hold down the Option Key (Mac) or Alt key (Win)
7. Click on the stopwatch next to Postion
8. Type in the expression loopOut(“offset”); in the Timeline
9. Click the Spacebar to previewThe animation will not start on the left and go through the middle and all the way to the right.
10. Move the keyframes further apart to slow down and closer together to speed up
