When creating simulation effects it can be a pain to dig through your code every time something needs to be changed. Putting attributes on a controller in your scene and connecting them to your particles' attributes can be a huge time saver. It's also beneficial for when you hand your effect off to someone who may not know much about MEL. This tutorial shows a simple example.
