The first thing is to make sure you understand pi, yourself. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the the diameter of the same circle. That is, the circumference of a circle is about 3 times longer than the diameter. How comes some paper. And a ruler. Cut a strip of paper that is 4 long and about 3/4 inch wide. Mark the strip with a zero near one end, and a 1 at 1 inch, a 2 at 2 inches and a 3 at 3 1/8 inches from the 0 mark. Let the kid see you using the ruler, so s/he sees the distance between the marks. Say to the kid, See? This 3 is about 3 inches from the zero, right? The kid sees. Now make the strip into a loop, by taping the ends together, so that the 0 and the 3 are next to each other on the exposed side of the loop. Point out that the 0 and 3 are still about 3 inches from another, as you rotate the loop so the kids sees the 1, 2 and 3 and 0. Now lay the ruler across the loop. The loop will be 1 wide 1 in diameter. The you say, See, the distance around the circle is about 3 times longer than the distance across. Thats the way all circles are. The distance around called the circumference, is always about 3 times longer than the distance across. Then grab some cans, bottles, flower pots or anything circular, and mark their outlines on paper. Measure across to get the diameter. Suppose the distance is 4 1/2 inches. Then the circumference will be about 3 times longer 13 1/2. If the kid cant yet multiply, then simply show it on the ruler by putting your finger at 4 1/2, then counting out another 4 1/2, and finally the third 4 1/2, so you stop at 13 1/2. Prove the rule by cutting a piece of string that long, and wrapping it around the can or bottle. There may be some overlap or a gap where the strings meet, because the calculation is only about right a quick timate. Once this relationship has been understood, you can turn to the about right part of it, which is all the numbers to the right of the decimal in the value of pi. What you say here will depend on the kid, but this might get you started OK, so you can see that the distance around is about 3 times the distance across in every circle we have tted. pi is just a name we give to the number that is about 3. But the actual, exact number, has never been figured out. Most people use the number 3.14, which is fairly close to 3 1/8. Thats why I put the number 3 on our loop at 3 1/8 inches from the zero. So, pi really means 3.14 in everyday use. Once your kid has absorbed this, grab a toothpick. Draw a straight line on a big piece of paper, then draw some 5 or 6 parallel lines that are one toothpick length plus a smidge apart from each other. if the pick is 2 inches, long, make the separation about 2 1/4. The idea is that the pick is NOT longer than the distance between the lines. Then, draw up a score sheet. 2 columns one is labeled across and the other is labeled between. Let the kid be your scorekeeper. Put the paper on the floor, then toss or drop the toothpick onto it from about 3 or 4 feet away to give a random placement when the pick comes to rt. After each repetition, call out the result Across, if the pick crosses a line, or between if it falls between. You drop or toss 25 times, then trade places and let the kid toss 25 times while you keep score. When you have finished, double the total throws you did 50, so double that to 100. Then count the number of times the pick landed across the lines. The doubled number of total throws will be about 3 times the score for across. That is, the across score will be about 30. This is always true, but you may need a great number of trials to prove it precisely.
