In this session on designing additional cache, the presenter introduces caching techniques such as cache aside, cache right through, and cache right back, which are not directly related to designing a distributed cache but are still worth knowing. The session then discusses the considerations that should be taken while designing the system for a particular caching strategy. The actual problem of designing a distributed cache is then discussed, followed by a brief look at the differences between two popular caching solutions, Memcached and Redis. The presenter encourages candidates to avoid discussing specific solutions in system design problems to avoid going into a rabbit hole. However, in the case of distributed cache, there is a chance that the interviewer might want to know if the candidate is familiar with any off-the-shelf solutions.
