Experimental design and Response Surface Method (RSM) are useful tools for studying, developing and optimizing a wide range of engineering systems. RSM is a collection of statistical techniques used for studying the relationships between measured responses and independent input variables. RSM has a long history and nowadays has many applications in the field of engineering and in structural reliability; it is especially used in combination with finite element models. Identifying and fitting from experimental data an appropriate response surface model requires some use of statistical experimental design fundamentals, regression modelling techniques, and optimization methods. All three of these topics are usually combined into RSM.
