Protecting your SQL Server with TLS/SSL is important to prevent data sniffing.
I would always recommend doing this with company PKI, however, this quick script shows how you can do that with Self Sign Certificates as well.
The same can be done for SQL Server 2014/2016/2016 and coming 2019.
