A callback function is a function passed into another function as an argument, which is then invoked inside the outer function to complete some kind of routine or action. It is used to make the code execute synchronously as well as asynchronously.
Callbacks make sure that a function is not going to run before a task is completed but will run right after the task has completed. It helps us develop asynchronous JavaScript code and keeps us safe from problems and errors.
