This video explains Modified EUI-64, which is used to automatically generate the low-order 64 bits of IPv6 addresses.

The low-order bits of an IPv6 address are called the interface identifier. The Modified EUI-64 format, based on the MAC address (IEEE EUI-48), was once a required interface identifier format.

However, the Modified EUI-64 format, which uses a MAC address, posed security and privacy issues. For this reason, RFC 7136, published in 2014, no longer requires the interface identifier format for unicast IPv6 addresses to be Modified EUI-64, and RFC 8064, published in 2017, deprecated it.

Although the use of Modified EUI-64 is now deprecated, it was once a required feature and is still implemented in many systems and is still in use in some cases, so I made this explanatory video. This video is also intended to inform people who studied IPv6 in the past that it is now deprecated.

In this video, we explain what Modified EUI-64 is, what issues led to its deprecation, and the currently recommended method.
