Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is a network layer data transfer protocol designed to replace IP version 4.
The problem with IPv4 is the insufficient number of addresses. An IPv4 address is 4 bytes long, and the maximum number of addresses is 4.3 billion.
In IPv6, the address field is 16 bytes long. Therefore, IPv6 provides the necessary number of addresses to connect devices to the internet both now and in the future.
Additional goals for IPv6 include protocol simplification and security.
The IPv6 protocol header format is discussed. The IPv6 World Launch took place on June 6, 2012 - http://www.worldipv6launch.org
Google provides statistics on requests to its services using the IPv6 protocol - https://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/s...
