This comparison of asynchronous vs. synchronous replication is for academic and research purposes
Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Replication
In synchronous replication, the primary server waits for confirmation from replica servers before completing a transaction. This guarantees strong data consistency and no data loss, but it can increase latency and slow performance.
In asynchronous replication, the primary server does not wait for replicas to acknowledge changes. It commits transactions immediately and sends updates afterward. This improves speed and performance, but there is a risk of data loss if the primary fails before replicas receive the latest updates.
Key difference: synchronous prioritizes consistency and reliability, while asynchronous prioritizes speed and responsiveness.
