🎓 A practical journey through implementing reinforcement learning in business, addressing real-world challenges and introducing tools to democratize its adoption.

Speakers:
Jochen Luithardt

Description:
In this presentation, Jochen Luithardt explores the practical implementation of reinforcement learning (RL) for real-world applications, drawing from his experience developing RL solutions for marketing campaign optimization. He discusses the challenges and solutions in bridging the gap between theoretical RL capabilities and practical deployment constraints. The talk covers three main obstacles: creating effective training environments through simulation, managing prediction errors through uncertainty estimation, and building robust infrastructure for deployment. Luithardt demonstrates how model-based RL approaches can work with limited data by leveraging supervised learning techniques to create environment simulators. He emphasizes the importance of uncertainty quantification in making RL systems reliable and debuggable in production settings. The presentation concludes with a discussion of pi_optimal, an open-source package designed to make RL more accessible to practitioners without extensive theoretical backgrounds. Through case studies including marketing campaign optimization that achieved 30% cost reduction, Luithardt illustrates how RL can discover novel strategies beyond human expertise. The talk provides insights into both theoretical and practical pathways for implementing RL systems, highlighting the potential for this technology to address complex decision-making challenges in various industries.
