[TRANSCRIPT] The CAP program is an exciting opportunity to address the workforce shortage. Before COVID, there was a huge shortage when it came to the construction workforce. A lot of people were out of work and so now we are working to address that shortage and then in turn help address the housing crisis.
There are three aspects of this program. We want to be able to have the skilled trades, those who want to get a residential builder's license. You know, we have that aspect of the program. And then the last part is contractors and developers who want to scale up. We have an opportunity to help train them to learn how to handle larger projects.
The program will provide capacity, development, training and resources for those who are facing barriers to equally participate in the construction industry. And I think this is just an incredible idea. We’re 190,000 houses short of being able to provide quality housing. Everything that we're doing is about increasing production. It's a big part of the Statewide Housing Plan.
What we have done with funding from the Housing Community Development fund, we have entered into a contract with HERCO, who is an organization. It's based in Detroit, but it will work statewide. The owner of HERCO is actually a graduate of the program years ago, and what she will be doing is she'll be working with a group of professionals that she's worked with for generations to provide the training to all the young people who will be going through the program. And then they'll be placed on projects like this one here today to actually have onsite skills, and they'll be working around the state in urban and rural communities. So we pull people from all over the state. We have to fill that gap everywhere we go.
The CAP program is all about learning. It's about putting things together so you can be a contractor. And if you want, you can be a builder and then you can have your builder's license. It encompasses so many things that these young people and I call us seasoned people because we have some of us as well. If we take the opportunity of that, we're going to be a very unique group in Michigan.
We are so excited that the governor has challenged us to go into those areas, those geographically underserved communities in the urban areas, the rural areas, and find people who are looking for employment.
This is the first time that I have ever seen this type of collaboration in Michigan, ever from the east side to the west. So I am very grateful that I'm able to see this happen and we're going to rock some socks off some people.
