I've been looking into split-flap displays for quite some time now but they
are sadly very hard to get these days.
I decided to design my own version early this year since I thought it would also be a cool addition to a school project I was working on at the time. For the project, it didn't have to be perfect, as long as it worked. Since I really liked the idea of a split-flap clock so I decided to work on it more over the summer break and make a new version.
It's not fully finished yet, there are still some things I need to figure out, one is that I still need to find a better way to put the numbers onto the flaps, right now they are just put on there with
masking tape and a marker.
I decided to still show it now, despite it not being finished yet, since it might take a while till I'm able to work on it again and it might still inspire people to make something like it :)
Parts I'm using:
(4x) ULN2003A driver ICs for powering the stepper motors
(4x) 28BYJ-48 Stepper motors
12v adapter
Wemos d1 mini (esp8266)
(2x) 74HC595 shift registers for controlling the stepper motors
(4x) limit switches for position detection
DS3231 RTC module for keeping track of the time
LM2596 Buck Converter for converting 12v to 5v
All the parts were printed in PLA using the Creality Ender 3.
PCB was ordered by JLCPCB
