The train was one of my earlier attempts to use Bezier Curves and the 'follow path' feature of Blender. Although the 'path' is not very smooth, this does work as a useful example of the operation and methods.

First a curve object is constructed in the shape desired. Then a track segment is created, using as small a segment as possible (in this case one tie and a left/right track) to allow for smoother transitions around curves. The segment origin should be the center, which allows the track to be centered on the curve line. Using the 'array' modifier (fit to curve option) creates the correct number of segments to make the track complete the path. Using the 'curve' modifier lines those segments up with the curve object. Items may be adjusted "live" to make them work right. Afterward make sure to 'apply' the modifiers before doing any animations!

The train cars are built similar to the track. Each car is created as one object, the origin can be its center or one end of the car. Make as many train cars as desired, but each should be separate objects! Use the 'curve' modifier to hook the car to the curve path. Each additional train car is put on the track in the same way, simply adding the modifier 'offset' so it is positioned in front or back of formerly placed cars.

Animating the train is now a simple matter of changing each train cars position along the curve path. Setting the 'follow curve' option of the 'curve' modifier allows the cars to rotate to match the angle of the path, giving a much more realistic animation.

Creating Bezier Curves can be very tricky until you have a lot of experience with them (which I still don't). An alternate way would be to create a series of line and arc segments using a single line object (from vertices and edges) and convert it to a 'curve' object when you like the shape. No matter how it is built, a curve path can be a very useful tool in creating animations!
