In this introductory microbiology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy kicks off our new series with a high-yield overview of Bacteria, setting the stage for understanding microbial structure, classification, and clinical relevance.
We begin by defining what makes bacteria unique as prokaryotic organisms, focusing on their lack of membrane-bound organelles and simple internal organization. From there, we explore the basic anatomy of a bacterial cell, including the cell wall, plasma membrane, nucleoid, ribosomes, flagella, pili, and capsule—explaining how each structure contributes to bacterial survival, virulence, and identification.
The lecture also introduces key classification principles, such as Gram staining, cell shape (cocci, bacilli, spirilla), and aerobic vs anaerobic metabolism, which form the basis for organizing clinically relevant bacteria. We’ll discuss the differences between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including how their distinct cell wall structures impact antibiotic susceptibility.
