In this first tutorial (of three) I start off by introducing the layered application architecture followed up by creating an application project with Maven. Subsequently, I configure the project's dependencies in Maven's pom.xml file and implement a small application to test that Spring has been wired-up correctly.
In subsequent tutorials we will use the Hibernate ORM framework to implement the persistence layer based on the Data Access (DAO) pattern. Finally, we will build the system's accompanying web application using the Spring MVC framework.
