Integration of field devices can be challenging when they are running on different protocols. A common example is getting a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) running in Modbus protocol to communicate with a PLC running Ethernet/IP protocol. Users can opt to write a customised serial application code in the PLC or use a separate HMI and write an application software for the HMI to bridge the difference. There is a third option of using Industrial Ethernet Gateway.

Industrial ethernet gateways are compact dedicated device with application programs pre-installed. Some gateways feature serial RS232/422/485 port(s) for direct connection with the end device with ethernet port(s) to connect to the PLC.

This video features Moxa's award winning MGate 5105 series. It is an industrial Ethernet gateway for Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP and EtherNet/IP network communication. To integrate existing Modbus devices onto an EtherNet/IP network, use Moxa MGate 5105-MB-EIP as a Modbus master or slave to collect data and exchange data with EtherNet/IP devices. The latest exchange data will be stored in the gateway as well. The gateway converts stored Modbus data into EtherNet/IP packets so the EtherNet/IP scanner can control or monitor Modbus devices.

In this video, we will show how to setup and configure Moxa Mgate Modbus Ethernet Gateway using a web browser or Mgate manager. The process is quick and easy. The software also displays system status and protocol status for easy maintenance.
