In Java 8, Function is a functional interface. It takes an argument (object of type T) and returns an object (object of type R).
The Function Interface is a part of the java.util.function package.

As per documentation :-

@FunctionalInterface
public interface Function
Represents a function that accepts one argument and produces a result.
This is a functional interface whose functional method is apply(Object).

The functional method is apply :-
R apply(T t)

T: denotes the type of the input argument
R: denotes the return type of the function
