Computer Network | Data Link Layer : Flow Control | Stop & Wait | Sliding Window Protocol
We were discussing the Stop and Wait Protocol where the sender transmits the frame and waits for acknowledgement. The possible problem that would arise is deadlock. We can wait a few more times but still if the acknowledgement does not arrive the sender should transmit the frame again.
When the sender resends the frame, the receiver rejects it as it is duplicate.
The question arises how the receiver came to know whether the frame is duplicate. A sequence number is assigned to every frame and that's how the receiver comes to know about it. We should know that the size of sequence number is 1
Now we will discuss the Sliding Window Protocol, its difference from the Stop and Wait Protocol. Sliding Window Protocol allows the sender to transmit frames as much as possible without any delay or waiting for the acknowledgement of the very first frame.
