This tutorial demonstrates how to easily create beautiful elevation maps using the Ridge Map library in Python. The Ridge Map library (link below) allows users to quickly pull topographic relief map data from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and create maps in the style of the band Joy Division's 1979 "Unknown Pleasures" album cover.
The results of the mapping through Ridge Map library are pretty amazing -- they are worthy of printing out in high resolution and being placed in your living room, if not an art gallery or museum.
Mapping is a core skill of spatial data science, which uses modern data science tools and machine learning methods in combination with traditional geographic information systems (GIS) tools and perspectives. This tutorial showcases how geospatial visualization can be pretty and beautiful, further allowing us to uncover patterns, relationships, and insights that are not immediately apparent.
