Drum programming for a songwriter can be a pretty daunting and more often than not, tedious experience that can take the attention away from focusing on the song as a whole.
Over the years, I have created beats from scratch but never could emulate the feel of a real drummer seeing as I don’t play the drums.
If this sounds like you, then I hope this can be of service. In part one, I showed my approach to create original drum beats using pre-existing MIDI drum grooves. These are grooves that were played by a real drummer so all of the feel (where the beats lie in the grid) and natural velocities are all retained making for a much more human sounding performance. Drums can make or break a song from the vibe all the way to the mix so it’s vital to get this first step right.

In THIS video, I’ll show you a quick hack to apply subtle changes to a new groove by recycling beats from what I’ve created so far.
These videos are going to be Logic Pro specific as it’s my D.A.W of choice but aside from the key commands, the concepts and tricks apply to any recording software.
