HTTPS stands for HTTP Secure. It works like normal HTTP (the request-response protocol underlying communication between clients and servers on the internet), but the requests and responses are sent over a Transport Layer Security (TLS) - formerly, its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) - to ensure the protection of the exchanged data. In this video, Elliott Brooks explains how HTTPS uses public key encryption to solve a very complicated problem: if everything you send can be intercepted online, how can you make sure that no one can steal your information?
