Git is the most famous Version Control System that is used by all IT professionals, be it devs or admins in the DevOps process. In today's tutorial, we will understand what is git with some examples and then learn some basic git commands. This tutorial basically introduces git to beginners and explains what git can do with the help of some examples and git commands.

Once git is installed we cover the following commands in this tutorial:

To create a git repository:
git init

Configure local git settings:
git config --global user.name "username"
git config --global user.email "email"

To check repository status:
git status

Add files to the staging area:
Add specific files:
git add "filenames"
Add all files in the git repo:
git add -A
Add all files in the current directory only:
git add .

Commit changes to the git repository:
git commit
or
git commit -m "message"

List all commits:
git log

Show the commit details/changes in files:
git show "commit_hash"

Revert a commit:
git revert "commit_hash"

Show changes since the last commit:
If files are not staged use:
git diff
If files are staged use:
git diff --cached
