In this SideFX Houdini tutorial Ill show you how to grow structures using a simulation for procedural 3D modeling of things like crystals, icicles, minerals, rocks, or abstract geometry. Using a houdini solver SOP we can use the previous frame to continuously keep growing our geometry with a simulation using a growth solver. The 3d geometry is then converted into a VDB and the back into polygons so that the geometry can be meshed together for better refractive glass material effects. In finally rendered everything out in Redshift and composited it in After Effects for this final motion graphics animation. This is a great way to generate and simulate procedural organic 3D models like rocks, bacteria, or viruses, and you can simply switch out the seed geometry from a box to a dodecahedron and create a new 3D structure. I used this effect to model 3D THC weed Shatter for a Cannabis brand, which looks like golden glass or honey.
