Digital Electronics Lecture 5 | Binary Arithmetic and Overflow Detection | 1’s Complement & 2’s Complement
In this lecture, we will study Binary Arithmetic and Overflow Detection in Digital Electronics. After learning signed number representation in the previous lecture, this lecture explains how binary addition and subtraction are performed inside digital systems.
Binary arithmetic is an important foundation for Digital Electronics, Digital Logic Design, Computer Organization and Architecture because computers perform arithmetic operations using binary numbers. In this lecture, we will understand binary addition, binary subtraction, subtraction using 1’s complement, subtraction using 2’s complement, carry, overflow, and how to detect overflow in signed binary arithmetic.
Topics covered in this lecture:
00:00:00 - Introduction
00:01:36 - Why Binary Arithmetic Matters
00:03:25 - Binary Addition Rules
00:07:22 - Handling Carry Bits
00:09:28 - Basic Binary Subtraction (Borrow Method)
00:16:46 - Complement Methods (Why they are used)
00:18:09 - 1's Complement Subtraction
00:20:32 - 2's Complement Subtraction
00:22:33 - Carry vs. Overflow vs. Borrow
00:23:17 - Overflow Detection Rules
00:26:42 - Four-Bit Example of Overflow
00:32:41 - Common Mistakes in Arithmetic
00:33:55 - Practice Questions
00:34:55 - Recap: Carry vs. Overflow
