Pythonic Shader Metaprogramming with Metashade - Pavlo Penenko, Maxon Computer
This talk introduces Metashade - a Python-based embedded domain-specific language (EDSL) for programming shaders (https://github.com/ppenenko/metashade). Metashade overloads Python's syntax to generate code in a target shading language. The presentation starts with a discussion of known shader programming challenges, such as managing permutations, portability, and code reuse. It then provides an overview of existing solutions, such as the C preprocessor, generics, shader graphs, transpiling, and EDSLs. Finally, the presentation details the design and implementation of Metashade and argues how it can be an improvement over the existing methods.
