[Synopsis]

This video shows you how to install FreeNAS on a old computer. The computer I am using has a AM3 socket based Athlon II Regor 245 processor with 8 GB of ram. You will need at least 8 GB to use the ZFS file system in FreeNAS. If you wish to put very large hard drives in your FreeNAS computer, you may need more than 8 GB of ram. Usually I don't use computer based NAS(Network Attached Storage) units, because the cost of operating it is more expensive than getting a Synergy NAS unit. I did have some problems installing FreeNas on older computers, like the Dell Dimension E521. I had problems like the network adapter not being detected by the FreeNAS O.S., so I couldn't use FreeNas on it eventhough I had 8GB of ram on it. On this computer, I had no such problems, and everything works perfectly.

I just had a extra computer laying around in my garage, so I made this video with it. I used a otherwise worthless computer I put together 11 years ago, and turned it into a NAS box. You can use a old computer in this fashion, or you can install a very light version of Linux and make it usable again.

This video covers the very basics of using FreeNAS, but you can learn more about if you are interested in it. A NAS box and the one I used in this tutorial functions in a very similar fashion. There are a lot of resources you can find out about it on Google, and on Youtube.
