A gramophone player, also known as a phonograph, is a device that plays recorded sound on a rotating disk known as a phonograph record. The sound is produced by a needle, or stylus, that is placed in the groove of the record, which then vibrates and amplifies the sound through a horn or speaker.
Gramophones were one of the earliest forms of recorded sound playback technology, and were first invented by Thomas Edison in 1877. They were later improved upon by other inventors such as Emile Berliner and Alexander Graham Bell. The most common type of gramophone was the mechanical gramophone, which used a hand-crank to rotate the record, and a spring-wound motor to provide power.
Gramophones became less popular after the introduction of the more convenient and portable vinyl record player, also known as a turntable, and the cassette and CD players in the later half of the 20th century. However, it still remains a popular way for music enthusiasts to play their vintage and antique records.
