Microsoft Corporation has announced that it is bringing its Database Software "SQL Server" to its rival operating system Linux.
According to Microsoft blog post, this will enable SQL Server to deliver a consistent data platform across Windows Server and Linux, as well as on-premises and cloud. This news has been welcomed by the likes of Red Hat and Canonical
A private preview version of the SQL Server on Linux is being available now.
Initially Microsoft is bringing only the core relational database capabilities to the preview, and Microsoft is targeting availability of SQL Server on Linux in the middle of next year, i-e 2017.
Microsoft is known for restricting its business software applications to run only on its own windows OS. This is the first time that microsoft has let its corporate database software run on a platform other than windows.
And, this announcement is considered as important shift from Microsoft, because its former CEO Steve Balmer once said like “Linux is a cancer”.
