Can you tell me why Python is better than PHP?

Python and PHP are both pretty popular. The difference is in the application and availability of resources.

Where is PHP better?

PHP dominates the server market. Other than that, it gets bad reviews.

Such as?

PHP gets high marks in programmer surveys as filling people with dread for fear it may still be around in twenty years. Oh, and for making people mad trying to code in it.

That's not a good track record.

PHP has a fair bit of flexibility, but that's why people say it is easy to shoot yourself in the foot working with it.

I heard Python did not allow programmers much creativity.

Python is more rigid than PHP, but that reduces the bugs you can get and the complexity of upgrading it. And Python code is more maintainable.

So much for programmer efficiency. I do not have to rewrite Java code every time they update it.

Good, because they tend to update Java or the JVM fairly regularly.

So Java is a hassle to maintain.

Python, however, is considered easy to maintain. Its stricter structure results in code that is easier to maintain.

But people use PHP for almost everything.

They might use PHP for almost anything, but Python is more versatile. You could write command line apps or embedded apps in PHP just as easily.

Python might be replaced in a few years, the way Clojure is replacing Java and Ruby is falling out of popularity.

Python is still evolving. That's why you have Jython, the Java -- Python hybrid.

OK, now I'm having nightmares.

Python has as many if not more code libraries plus easy to use interfaces. That makes it a dream for developers.

What about PHP?

PHP is popular for little projects and stuff that just sits on your server. Python is preferred by big businesses for large scale projects and enterprise wide applications.

Why would I care about that?

PHP is popular with hobbyists. Businesses vote with dollars for Python programmers.
