Digital Transformation is a given for many organizations, and yet they often struggle with how to get it going. One pattern in many organizations is "The Execution Gap": There is a vision that talks about Digital Transformation and sometimes even about APIs, but when you dig a little deeper how that vision is executed, there is a gap. This gap hurts many organizations today and fixing it can create a lot of value for organizations.
This video starts from having a vision, but explains that having a vision is not enough. It's great as a starting point, but just by itself doesn't change an organization. The vision must be turned into a strategy, which is a detailed and plausible plan how the vision can be turned into reality. But even when having a strategy, it is not quite clear how to execute on that plan.
This is where having a program is necessary: It turns the plan into processes and indicators that can be used to follow the plan and execute on it. For something as strategic and far-reaching as Digital Transformation this also must indicate how the plan is funded. Thinking that the plan kind of executes itself as a by-product of parallel and disjoint activities is another anti-pattern that prevents effective progress.
Of course APIs are not the only thing necessary for Digital Transformation. But they are a necessary component, which means that without having a strategy, a program, and a platform, it is unlikely that Digital Transformation will succeed. Publications like McKinsey and Harvard Business Review often publish studies that make it clear that scaling Digital Transformation is hard, and that leaders must take a more hands-on approach in managing how it is supposed to succeed.
