Years ago, most developers would simply download Java from Sun or Oracle and deploy a monolithic application on an enterprise application server. However, things have changed, and developers now have the option to choose between multiple OpenJDK distributions and create applications or microservices using frameworks such as Spring Boot, Micronaut, or Quarkus. While all these products and tools contribute to a more diverse ecosystem, underlying standards and specifications are still shared. Fortunately, the Eclipse Foundation takes care of such standards and has established working groups for critical specifications and tools in the Java ecosystem.
In this session, we will take a closer look at the Eclipse working groups and projects that are driving Java forward and helping developers and companies create remarkable solutions based on open source. In addition to the well-known Eclipse IDE, the Adoptium, JakartaEE, and MicroProfile working groups are laying the foundation for mission-critical aspects of the Java ecosystem today. Together, we will explore the origins of these projects and how they were established. Furthermore, we will gaze into the crystal ball and speculate on the future of the Eclipse Foundation as a cornerstone of the Java community.
