What’s the difference between STEP 7 Basic and STEP 7 Professional?
STEP 7 Basic can only be used for programming Siemens S7-1200 PLCs but STEP 7 Professional can be used for programming S7-1200, S7-1500, S7-300, and S7-400 PLCs. This is the main difference.
You can use the basic version of STEP 7 to program the basic Siemens PLC series which is S7-1200 and you can use the professional version of STEP 7 to program all types of Siemens S7 PLCs including S7-1200, 1500, 300, and 400 PLCs.
The price difference between STEP 7 Basic and STEP 7 Profesional
If you are curious about the price difference, STEP 7 Basic is usually priced around €300 to €400 and STEP 7 Profesional is usually priced around €2400, although many Siemens partners and distributors sell these for a higher price.
Which version should you buy?
If you are a beginner, the best option for you is STEP 7 Basic. The good thing about STEP 7 Basic is that when you order the basic PLC starter kit from Siemens, you’ll get lifetime access to this PLC programming software.
On top of that, you will also get an actual S7-1200 PLCs which you can easily connect to your software (STEP 7 Basic), download your PLC program on it, and test it with a real PLC. How fun is that?
If you need to use STEP 7 to program any of the S7-1500, S7-300, and S7-400 PLCs, you need to go with STEP 7 Profesional.
