Scope can be tricky. But it is simple if you understand that anything within the curly brackets is considered a scope { }.
Functions, loops, and things like if statements all create their own scopes to avoid variables from overwriting other variables that are declared outside of the scope. This could be one of the reasons that your variables might not be doing what you expect them to do.
